Malaikodi - Sri Narayani Siddhar Peetham
This temple complex located eight km away from the
town of Vellore, spreads over 150 acres of land,
and comprises of the shrines, a kitchen, an anna-daanam
(free meals) center, where about a thousand people
eat every morning and evening, a gosala (cow-shed),
an elephant shed, farms, Sripuram (spiritual park–120
acres), 100-bedded children hospital, school, administrative
center, and shops outside the temple. The waste
(largely organic) was being burnt outside until
two years ago.
Now the temple practices ZWM. It has 10 male calves,
which feed on banana leaves used for serving food
and the kitchen wastewater and abhishekam water.
There is a biogas plant. Between April 2002 and
November 2003, the project has generated 33.8 tonnes
of compost (worth Rs.52, 280) and earned Rs.22,
400 through sale of recyclables. The compost generated
is used in the temple garden, agricultural fields,
nursery development and hill restoration project.
Seeing the success of the project, the temple management
has now extended ZWM to the Malaikodi village, which
has 341 families.
